Each mask has distinct and special characteristics - masks are seen as a link between the living world and the supernatural world.  Each piece of wood brings its own features and characteristics to the mask - after drying the wood, the features are carefully hand chiselled to represent ancestors, entities or the dead - colours are added using charcoal and mineral powders like clay.  Dancers and ceremonial performers bring the masks to life in rituals and celebrations.
