A beautifully polished, free standing Goniatite fossil - perfect as a unique gift or display piece.
Goniatites are Ammonoids with a distinctive zig-zag pattern that marks the spiralling growth in the shell - a beautiful example of the remarkable symmetry often found in nature. Goniatites were named after their wavy suture lines that decorate the outer shell in beautiful patterns (these sutures outline the chambers or septa that were used for regulating bouyancy allowing ammonites to quickly change depths in the ocean. The Goniatites lived early in the Devonian period, some 400 million years ago, and became extinct during the Permian period. Like Ammonites, they share a common ancestor with the squid and octopus.
We hand pick these Goniatites from a 3rd generation family owned quarry in North Africa where the item is excavated and hand polished. The image is indicative of the style only. Being a natural product no two items will be exactly the same - the actual fossils and colouring will vary. Average size 20-22cm.
